NOWART | COMMUNITY MURAL PROGRAM

At the beginning of 2023 I had the incredible opportunity to partner with the amazing team at NOWART, based in LA, to take part in the NOWART COMMUNITY MURAL PROGRAM.

The NOWART Community Mural Program brings local artists into public spaces by commissioning murals that reflect the diversity and unique cultures of communities all across the U.S. With over 800 artists involved, the program connects creative individuals with the chance to make a lasting impact through collaborations with Walmart stores.

This program is all about community engagement. Each mural is crafted not just to beautify a space but to spark conversation and foster connection within the local community. The goal is to create a shared experience through art, allowing residents to see their stories and cultural identities reflected in the work.

My partnership with NOWART has been fantastic, and together, we've brought 18 murals to life at 18 different Walmart storefronts across the country. It's been an honor to contribute to such a meaningful initiative.

This was my first mural with NOWART, and it was installed at the Walmart in my hometown of Bozeman, MT, at a massive size of 16' x 7.3'! I was beyond excited for the opportunity to create something so impactful in my own community—it was an experience I’ll never forget!

THE PROCESS

Creating a mural with NOWART is a collaborative, step-by-step process that ensures the artwork captures the essence of each community.

The process begins when the Walmart store manager works with NOWART to provide specific details about the mural, such as cultural references, local iconography, and other elements that reflect the community where the mural will be installed. With these guidelines, NOWART then shares the mural specs and compositional direction with me.

I begin by drawing the mural digitally, starting with a rough preliminary sketch that outlines the basic composition. From there, I refine the design, adding more detail and cleaning up the lines. Once the structure is solid, I begin adding color to bring the piece to life.

When I feel the digital illustration is close to complete, I send the file to NOWART and the Walmart store manager for review. They may provide feedback, and I'll make any necessary revisions. Sometimes, the design is spot on from the start, and everyone is happy with the outcome.

Once the design is approved, NOWART takes the digital file and enlarges it for printing. The artwork is printed on adhesive-backed vinyl strips, which are then applied to the wall space in the store, bringing the mural to life in the physical space. It's a rewarding process, and the finished mural becomes a vibrant, community-focused piece of art.

AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with NOWART. Their dedication to bringing artists and communities together has made this experience truly special. Collaborating with a team that values creativity and community as much as I do has been a dream. I'm so excited to have been a part of such an impactful program, and I look forward to the future possibilities of working together again. Thank you, NOWART, for making this journey possible!
